History of Football at Texas Southern University
Texas Southern University (TSU), located in Houston, Texas, has a storied football program that dates back to its inception in 1947. The program was established as a means to foster school spirit and community engagement, quickly becoming a vital part of the university's identity.
Initially competing at the collegiate level, TSU football joined the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in 1963, where it has remained a prominent member. The Tigers achieved their first significant success in the 1970s, highlighted by their appearance in the 1972 Orange Blossom Classic, a milestone that showcased the team on a national stage.
The 1980s and 1990s marked a period of growth and competitiveness for the program. Under the leadership of notable coaches, the Tigers secured multiple SWAC championships and produced several NFL players, further solidifying their reputation within collegiate football.
In 2000, TSU dedicated efforts by the university administration and coaching staff to revitalize the program. The construction of the new state-of-the-art weight room facility and increased recruitment efforts have contributed to a resurgence.
Today, Texas Southern University football continues to strive for excellence, fostering young talent and promoting academic success alongside athletic achievement. The program remains an integral part of the university's mission to empower students and strengthen community ties through the spirit of competition.
